GTA 6 and the Disc-Death Problem: Why Preservation Groups Are Worried

The Video Game History Foundation says downloading GTA 6 and hoping it runs in 50 years isn't a real preservation plan, especially as PlayStation phases out physical discs.

The Video Game History Foundation is sounding the alarm over what Sony's move away from physical media means for the long-term survival of games like Grand Theft Auto VI. As PlayStation scales back disc support, the nonprofit says the industry is treating digital downloads as a preservation strategy — and that's a problem.

According to GamesRadar, the Foundation pushed back hard on the idea that downloading a game today guarantees it'll still be accessible decades from now. "Downloading GTA 6 with the hope it'll run in 50 years is not a preservation solution," the organization said, pointing to the gap between what fans and historians expect archives to do and what's actually possible when physical media disappears.

The core frustration is institutional. The Foundation noted it's genuinely unclear what the industry expects groups like theirs to accomplish when discs — the format that has historically made long-term archival feasible — are being phased out in favor of downloads tied to online ecosystems that may not exist in a generation. "What continues to baffle us is what the industry expects institutions like ours to do about it," they said, per GamesRadar.

It's a real tension. Digital storefronts shut down, licensing agreements expire, and server infrastructure gets retired. A disc sitting on a shelf still works. A license key for a game that's been delisted doesn't. For a title as massive as GTA 6, the commercial muscle of Rockstar and Take-Two makes near-term access seem safe — but preservation isn't about the next five years, it's about the next fifty.

With GTA 6 shaping up to be one of the biggest releases in gaming history, how it gets preserved — or fails to be — could set a precedent for the entire industry. The Foundation's comments land at a critical moment, and they're unlikely to stop pushing until someone with real power listens.
